Holacanthus passer also known as King angelfish is found in the warm waters of the Eastern Pacific. They are common found in the rocks near shore. From the Sea of Cortez to Peru, including the Galapagos Islands. Found at depths from 4 to 30 meters. As adult species the King angelfish has a dark blue body. Yellow to orange markings on dorsal as well as anal fins. Round area, "crown" of light blue spots on forehead.
The King angelfish is a feeder upon live sponges in the wild, will also feed upon small crustaceans, somtimes graze upon filamentous algae, and is capable of feeding upon numerous groups of sessile invertebrates, particularly tunicates and bryozoans. Since Holacanthus passer survives on sponges so make sure you can get the right food in captivity. In the wild Holacanthus passer is known to act as cleaner fish, eating external parasites, from sharks!
In the aquarium Holacanthus passer is known to become aggressive towards their own species so you should keep only one per aquarium. Since the King angelfish is very territorial it should not be kept with other angelfish and should be introduced last in a community tank.
