Info

Istiblennius pox lives in shallow water environments in reef crests and fringing reefs, intertidal zones, and rock pools.
At night, this nearshore species can be observed out of the water on rocks.

Naming: "pox" is a modified spelling of the English "pocks", an eruptive disease like chicken pox, which also refers to spots resembling disease outbreaks and, in the present case, spots on the occipital crest of males of the species.

Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
