The deep-water gorgonian Narella gigas is previously known only from the Kaiwi Channel southeast of O'ahu and a seamount between Brooks Banks and French Frigate Shoals, Hawaiii.
Commensal polychaete have never been found in this species, but the holotype harbored a small white snake sdtern, and one colony was overgrown by a Zoanthus species.
Etymology: The species name "gigas" is from Latin meaning giant, referring to the size of the colony and its thick branches.
