Info
Over sandy areas around shallow rocky reefs and coral communities, the mullet Parupeneus biaculeatus can be encountered.
The species name "biaculeatus" is made up of the syllables "bi" for "two" and "aculeatus" for "spiny", this allusion is not explained further but perhaps refers to "conspicuous" dorsal fin spines, the upper being short and blunt while the lower is long and pointed.
The species rummages the bottom with its baleen for edible invertebrates, making it unsuitable for community aquariums and should remain in the sea.
Synonyms:
Parupeneus aurantius Fourmanoir, 1966
Parupeneus kneri Bleeker, 1872
Parupeneus taniatus (Kner, 1865)
Pseudupeneus taniatus (Kner, 1865)
Upeneus biaculeatus Richardson, 1846
Upeneus taeniatus Kner, 1865
