Info

Aphanipathes verticillata is currently only known from the Pacific waters around Hawaiii.
It is interesting that very many black corals from Hawaiii have entered into a symbiosis with zooxanthellae, different from what is known or suspected from black corals see the link:
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/47509639_Azooxanthellate_Most_Hawaiiian_black_corals_contain_Symbiodinium
(23 of 53 antipatharia examined possessed zooxanthellae (43 percent)).

There are both male and female colonies of Aphanipathes verticillata (gonochorism).

Subspecies:
Aphanipathes verticillata verticillata Brook, 1889.
Aphanipathes verticillata mauiensis Opresko, Wagner, Montgomery & Brugler, 2012.

Synonyms:
Antipathes verticillata (Brook, 1889).
Aphanipathes verticillata Brook, 1889
