Toxicity

Toxopneustes elegans is (very) poisonous and the poison can kill you under circumstances!!!
If you want to keep Toxopneustes elegans, inform yourself about the poison and its effects before buying. Keep a note with the telephone number of the poison emergency call and all necessary information about the animal next to your aquarium so that you can be helped quickly in an emergency.
The telephone numbers of the poison emergency call can be found here:
[overview_and_url_DE]
Overview Europe: European Association of Poisons Centres and Clinical Toxicologists

This message appears for poisonous, very poisonous and also animals whose poison can kill you immediately. Every human reacts differently to poisons. Please therefore weigh the risk for yourself AND your environment very carefully, and never act lightly!

Info

Toxopneustes elegans is a sea urchin endemic to Japanese waters that is also highly toxic.

Interestingly, the symbiotic crab Zebrida adamsii White,1847 cohabits with the sea urchin and is not affected by the toxicity of the hedgehog,

Toxopneustes [from *toxo- , Greek pneustēs = breathing heavily], the toxin is also dangerous to humans (slackening of body muscles, respiratory distress and possibly respiratory arrest).

On the internet there is a report about an occurrence from Indonesia, but no reliable sources can be found.

Hybridization between the sea urchin species Toxopneustes elegans and Toxopneustes pileolus has already been scientifically proven, both sea urchins have the same winter spawning season in Okinawa.

Like other sea urchins, Toxopneustes elegans collects various items and carries them on its body, see www.echinoderms.net.
