Info
Conopea fidelis is a barnacle associated with gorgonians.
The barnacle Conopea fidelis was detected on the following horn coral: Muriceopsis tuberculata
Barnacles cover a variety of surfaces, attaching to hulls of boats, rocks, and many marine animals such as whales and coral, here horn coral.
These small crustaceans live as filter feeders and do not harm affected marine animals, however they are very undesirable on boat hulls as barnacle infestation slows down cruising speed and significantly increases fuel consumption.
Tiny bumps can be seen on the outside of the shell, especially on the apices.
Color variable, white with pinkish or light purple on parietes and base, radii usually white or lighter, rostrum often white.
Etymology. Etymology. Conopea fidelis is so named because it is faithful to a species of gorgonian , host species of the gorgonian, Muriceopsis tuberculata.
From Latin fidelis: faithful or true.
