Info

Megapitaria maculata (Linnaeus, 1758)

Megapitaria maculata is a bivalve in the family Veneridae, colloquially known as clams. Members of the family have rounded to triangular shells and have a prominent lunula ("little moon") in front of the whorl. Clams usually burrow in sandy soils and are found in warm and temperate seas worldwide. Some also in river mouths. Many species are edible.

Description Megapitaria maculata: Shell size up to 70 mm; Shell ovoid, significantly less elongated than Macrocallista nimbosa. High-gloss surface. Sculpture made of very fine growth lines under a shiny layer. Color brown with irregular brown spots, sometimes arranged in radial stripes. White inside.

The mussel is host to the ectoparasitic copepod Pseudomyicola spinosus.
