Info

The coral is listed as "azooxanthellate" in the article "Diversity and distribution of azooxanthellate corals in the Colombian Caribbean", see page 18 and explanation on page 16, Appendix.
However, this "obvious" reference from the title only becomes clear once you have looked at the list of zooxanthellate, azooxantellate and apozooxanthellate corals in the article.

Bellonella rubistella is the only member of the Alcyoniidae that occurs in the shallow SABA and normally inhabits deeper areas.

Drs. Susan T. DeVictor & Steve L. Morton's 2007 paper represented the first record of Bellonella rubistella in the SAB.
The colony examined here is smaller than the USNM specimens from more southern or tropical areas.

Related species: Bellonella variabilis (Studer, 1891)

Synonym: Alcyonium rubistella Deichmann, 1936

Our very special and heartfelt thanks for the permission to use all color photos from the article "Identification guide to the shallow water (0-200 m) octocorals of the South Atlantic Bight" goes to the two authors Drs. Steve Morton & Susan DeVictor, USA.
