Coronium elegans Simone, 1996
Coronium elegans is a snail from the family Muricidae, known as spiny snails. Spiny snails have a shell with more or less pronounced spines, as well as a horny operculum to close the shell opening. The family includes small to large snails with a worldwide distribution, especially in the tropical seas. There they are usually found in coral reefs, hunting for invertebrates on which they feed.
The genus Coronium currently only includes 6 described species. Coronium elegans is the type species to describe the genus. The generic name “Coronium” is an arbitrarily modified name from the Latin “corona” = crown.
Coronium elegans appears to be known only from Brazil and Argentina. It is a rare species, perhaps just because it prefers deeper waters. The original description states that this snail can be found at depths of 340m. The predatory shell snail has an operculum to close the shell opening. What exactly it feeds on is not documented.
