Info

This genus Hyattella comprises 21 species (as of 2020), all of which are distributed in the Indo-Pacific, with the exception of Hyattella obscura Lendenfeld, 1889 and Hyattella cavernosa (Pallas, 1766) from the Atlantic (Van Soest et al. 2019).

The living sponge is spherical, irregularly massive; on the surface, a network of fibers forms a distinct reticular pattern connecting the prominent oscula between the thin cuticle.
Where the sponge is not covered by foreign material and epibionts, the color appears light yellow

Special features of this marine sponge are its spherical body, which is supported by a short stalk, small fibers, the absence of inclusions and its light yellow color.

The report from Mozambique is the first ever report of the species.
Unfortunately, exact size data are not available.

Etymology:
The species name “sulfurea” comes from the Latin name meaning “yellow” and refers to the color of the living sponge.
