The holotype was discovered around Kai Island, east of Banda, Indonesia, and the deep-sea soldierfish was observed in caves at depths of 182 and 192 meters.
The body of this soldierfish is red with transparent fins and white scales arranged laterally.

Etymology:
The species name “kaianus” is named after the Kai Islands, where this soldierfish was first discovered.
