Fasciolaria tulipa (Linnaeus, 1758)
Fasciolaria tulipa is a shell snail from the family Fasciolariidae, which are called tulips and spindles or tulip and spindle snails due to their shell shape. Members of the family usually have an operculum and periostracum. They are larger snails that feed carnivorously, predatorily on mussels or other snails. Tulip and spindle snails live primarily in shallow water in the tropics.
The true tulip snail, Fasciolaria tulipa, can be found in shallow water on sandy bottoms and among seagrass. The predatory snail grows up to 25 cm. It preys on other shell snails. The main food is Fasciolaria lilium and Lobatus gigas.
The snail itself should be edible but not of culinary interest.
