Info

Papilloculiceps longiceps (Cuvier, 1829)
Tentacled flathead

The crocodile fishes (Platycephalidae) - they are also called flatheads - usually live very close to the coast in tropical latitudes of the Indo-Pacific.

One species (Solitas gruveli) lives in the eastern Atlantic, on the African coast, and three species have migrated into the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal (Lessepsian migration).

The fish prefer continental coasts and often stay in lagoons of coral reefs and in estuaries.

Due to its size not suitable for every aquarium. Nocturnal lurking hunter, waiting for prey! Often well camouflaged on rubble from which it can hardly be distinguished. Some seem to grow much larger than 50 cm , probably then another species.

Synonyms:
Papilloculiceps grandidieri (Sauvage, 1873)
Platycephalus grandidieri Sauvage, 1873
Platycephalus longiceps Cuvier, 1829
Platycephalus papilloculus Fowler, 1935
Platycephalus tentaculatus Rüppell, 1838
Rogadius tentaculatus (Rüppell, 1838)
