Captive breeding / propagation

The offspring of Moina salina are possible. Unfortunately, the number of offspring is not large enough to cover the demand of the trade. If you are interested in Moina salina, please ask your dealer for offspring. If you already own Moina salina, try breeding yourself. This will help to improve the availability of offspring in the trade and to conserve natural stocks.

Husbandry

Daday, 1888

Moina salina is the "salt water variant" of the freshwater Daphnia pulex and a good food for small marine fishes, pipefishes and seahorses.

The salt water flea is a high-fiber food animal with about 2.5% fat, about 95% water and includes the vitamins A and B2, but with low energy value and therefore should be offered as a feed supplement.

If you have the opportunity, you should feed the fleas with algae such as Nannochloropsis salina, Nannochloropsis oculata and Isochrysis galbana .

In large containers, salt water fleas can be well bred, but only with good ventilation and enough phytoplancton.
