Info
Calcinus hazletti is a common sympatric species of hermit crabs found in the Hawaiiian Islands as well as several other locations in the Indo-Pacific
Pacific and common in subtidal reefs.
Calcinus hazletti is found predominantly on the cauliflower coral Pocillipora meandrina and Porites lobata.
The branches of this coral provide hiding places that presumably protect the hermit crabs from predators.
The first description of the species from Hawaiii gives a lateral length of between 2.3mm to 4.7mm, a truly small hermit!
Brief Description:
Shield pink or pale orange, apex of rostrum and anterolateral corners dark orange-red; eyestalks dark orange-red, with broad white band next to cornea; eyenails dark orange-red; antennal peduncles dark orange-red, terminal segment distally pink, flagellum pink; antennal peduncles dark orange-red, terminal segment with broad longitudinal pink stripe, flagellum pink.
Chelypees generally dark orange-red, fingers and tips of spines white.
Hind legs dark orange-red, dactyls white with small orange-red area proximally.
