Info
Literature finding:aIridogorgia verrucosa is a deep-water orange gorgonian discovered in Caroline Ridge in the western Pacific Ocean at a depth of about1400 meters on a seamount temporarily designated M8.
Only on this seamount on the Caroline Ridge has the species been recorded, growing on a rocky bottom covered with black corals and scleractinian corals
Etymology.
The Latin adjective "verrucosus" (verrucose) refers to the numerous small warts in this species.
It grows on a rocky bottom covered by black corals and scleractinian corals (Figure 5A).
Remarks.
Iridogorgia verrucosa is characterized by the relatively short colony and narrow spiral coil, irregular spindles and scales in the polyp body wall, and numerous verrucae.
It resembles Iridogorgia splendens and Iridogorgia densispiralis in the short colony and narrow spiral, but differs from Iridogorgia splendens in the numerous rods in the tentacles (as opposed to sparse), sclerites in the polyp body wall with irregular edges (as opposed to regular), and numerous sclerites in the coenenchyma between the polyps (as opposed to rare to absent)
Iridogorgia verrucosa can be distinguished from Iridogorgia densispiralis by the absence of rods in the coenenchyma (as opposed to present) and numerous and dense verrucae in the branches (as opposed to sparse).
