Info

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Wilhelm (Willi) Leyendecker, a diver and long-time visitor to the Chumbe Reef off Zanzibar, Tanzania.
Willi not only sends us fish for identification via the “What is this?” section, but also photos of new, previously unlisted species, as in this case of Callionymus persicus.

The Persian dragonet seems to have a wider distribution than previously thought; occurrences in East Africa have not yet been recorded in the specialist literature.

The identification of this species of dragonet was provided super-fast by Dr. Ronald Fricke in response to an inquiry.

Males are more elongated and slender than the somewhat more compact females, and the first dorsal fin of the males is significantly higher than that of the females.
Dr. Randall has provided illustrations of males and females in his book “Coastal Fishes of Oman” on page 353.
