The amphipod Iphimedia declivis has so far been found only in Japanese waters in Shizuoka and Ōita Prefectures; its body is dark reddish-brown, and a distinct band of yellow and orange stripes runs along the midline of its back.
The lateral surfaces of the pereonites and pleonites are edged with white spots; the coxae and proximal parts of the pereopods have scattered white spots.
The eyes of Iphimedia declivis are red.
In the ocean, this amphipod plays an important role as a source of protein for larger carnivores within the food chain.
Etymology.
The species name “declivis” derives from the Latin adjective “declivis” (= sloping downward), referring to the shape of pereonite 1.
