Info

(Jordan & Gilbert, 1882)

Very special thanks for the first two photo of Malacoctenus zonifer to the famous Australien ichthyologists Dr. Gerry R. Allen and Dr. Ross Robertson.

Malacoctenus zonifer is endemic to the Eastern Pacific, and is found from the tip of Baja and central Mexico, including the Tres Marias Islands, to Ecuador.

The Glossy blenny inhabits rocky and rubble substrate to depths of 10 meters, the fish can also be found in rocky and coral reef areas.

Synonym:
Clinus zonifer Jordan & Gilbert, 1882

Classification: Biota > Animalia (Kingdom) > Chordata (Phylum) > Vertebrata (Subphylum) > Gnathostomata (Superclass) > Pisces (Superclass) > Actinopteri (Class) > Perciformes (Order) > Blennioidei (Suborder) > Labrisomidae (Family) > Malacoctenus (Genus) > Malacoctenus zonifer (Species)

Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
