Info
Hemicorallium imperiale is a deep-water gorgonian known so far mainly from Pacific waters.
Here the gorgonian is found on underwater mountains (seamounts) and in deep sea canyons, where it settles on hard substrates like rocks.
The first describing scientist Frederick M. Bayer (31.10 .1921 - 2.10 2007), suggested to give it the colloquial name "vinaceous pink coral" for wine pink or wine red coral.
Deep-water creatures, such as gorgonians, are suffering from the increasing management of the deep sea by bottom trawls, which easily travel corals off the substrate, contributing to their destruction.
Hemicorallium imperiale is not suitable for aquarium keeping and is landed as bycatch.
Synonym: Corallium imperiale Bayer, 1955
