Info
The deep-water gorgonian Hemicorallium abyssale was discovered around Kauai Island, Hanamaulu Bay, Hawaiii and identified by Dr. Frederick Bayer in 1956, and named Corallium abyssale.
The systematics of Coralliidae was revised based on molecular phylogenetic analyses and detailed morphological studies.
(Taxonomic revision of Coralliidae with descriptions of new species from New Caledonia and the Hawaiiian Archipelago, 2016).
By applying statistical comparisons of morphological characters, the current study has succeeded in delimiting the coralliids.
According to the results of the current study, there are 43 species within the Coralliidae, including 7, 18, and 18 species in Corallium, Hemicorallium, and Pleurocorallium, respectively.
Hemicorallium abyssale was pale pink with slightly darker center.
Etymology:
The species epithet "abyssal" is derived firstly from the Latin "abyssus" and from the Greek "ábyssos", meaning the "abyss"
Synonym: Corallium abyssale Bayer, 1956
