Silversides, Atherinidae, family of silversides-like, with about 160 species.
Silversides live in large schools in tropical to temperate latitudes. Some species also occur in freshwater. They primarily inhabit areas near beaches, in open water, but near shore at depths up to 20 meters. Some are schooling fish of open water, but come near shore during the spawning season. They eat fish larvae and plankton, mostly from the surface.
They are hardly suitable for keeping in a home aquarium.
They are caught in large quantities as food fish, especially in the Mediterranean.
