Info
The holotype of the soft coral Alcyonium jorgei had a height of 3.5 cm high and was 2.5 cm wide, the coral had a very short stem, only a few mm long.
The main stem had short slender lobes about 1cm long.
Polyps were distributed all over the stem and lobes, but most abundant at the end of the lobes.
The calyxes were dome-shaped and all polyps were partially retracted, with the tentacles retracted. The polyps were up to about 1.00 mm wide and high.
Color: orange
The species was regularly found in the continental fjords of the northern Patagonian zone and probably also occurs in the fjords of the central Patagonian zone.
It inhabits moderately steep to vertical rocky substrate. Unlike Alcyonium glaciophilum, which also occurs in the interior fjords, it appears only at sites with low to moderate sedimentation.
This soft coral occurs on moderately steep to vertical, rocky substrates in areas of low to moderate sedimentation in moderately exposed fjords and bays
Alcyonium jorgei resembles Alcyonium yepayek both species have digitized colonies, and both have similar rods inside the colony. Alcyonium jorgei differs in having more slender lobes and clubs with more spiny heads and usually without a central tubercle.
Variability.
One colony has two lobes, the other was unbranched and only 1 cm long another was also unbranched but 2 cm long.
Two colonies were branched, one with only one lateral lobe.
Etymology:
The species name is in honor of the former rector of the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso, Chile, Jorge Gonzalez Foster.
