Info

With a length of up to 100 meters, the Bodianus reticulatus is one of the largest wrasse in the oceans, alongside the Napoleon wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus), which can grow up to 230 cm long and weigh up to 191 kg.

Males develop a large hump on their heads, making them easy to distinguish from females, which do not have humps.

Juvenile wrasse stay in shallow water zones up to about 10 meters, while the larger adult animals prefer depths of up to 30 meters.
They are identical in shape and color to typical Bodianus, yellow-orange with black markings on the rear.

The courtship and mating behavior of large wrasse is very interesting. In large aquariums, spawning has been observed, with the strongest male chasing away all other males and then quickly rising to the surface with a single female, where spawning takes place.

Due to their expected final size, juvenile animals that may be offered in specialty stores should not be purchased!
