Eastern Atlantic: mainly between Senegal and the Republic of Congo; also from Cape Verde.
Occurs on rocky bottoms and in the vicinity of coral reefs. Young are frequently encountered in coastal waters, particularly estuaries and sometimes in rivers.
Feeds mainly on fishes and bottom-dwelling invertebrates.
